Columbia wins music rights to "Smash"

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – Columbia Records has won the rights to the music from NBC's upcoming midseason musical series "Smash."

The music will include covers and originals composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, the team behind "Hairspray" and "Catch Me If You Can."

In addition, former "American Idol" finalist Katharine McPhee, who stars in "Smash," also signed a solo recording deal with Columbia Records. She previously recorded for RCA and Verve Forecast.

"Smash," which will air on Mondays beginning in January on NBC4, follows a collection of theater artists as they create a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Besides McPhee, it will star Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston.

Columbia already handles the "Glee" CD releases and will also be releasing music from "The X Factor" this fall./)
