A 16-year-old Michigan student collapsed and died just moments after hitting the game-winning shot in overtime to lift Fennville High School to a 57-55 win over Bridgman. Leonard drove the lane and hit a lay-in late in overtime, but in the celebration following the game he reportedly collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. Leonard was pronounced dead at Holland Hospital later that night.
The report comes from Steve Kaminski of the nearby Grand Rapids Press. A cause of death is unknown at this time, and an autopsy will likely be performed in the coming days.
"The information that we have is that he made the game-winning basket, and that there were a number of players and fans out on the court, and Wes just collapsed," said Deb Patterson, Holland Hospital's patient care coordinator. "Wes arrived at 9:20 and paramedics were performing CPR on him. He was pronounced dead at 10:40.
Leonard was a two-sport star for Fennville, earning All-State honorable mention honors this past season and scoring 1,000 career points on the basketball court. His high school was undefeated on the year, improving to 20-0 after his game-winning shot in overtime on Thursday night.
