Susan Boyle is not expecting 2011 best

Susan Magdalane Boyle (born 1 April 1961is a Scottish singer who came to international public attention when she appeared as a contestant on reality TV programme Britain's Got Talent on 11 April 2009, singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables. Her first album was released in November 2009 and debuted as the number one best-selling CD on charts around the globe.

Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience's first impression of her, with the standing ovation she received during and after her performance, led to an international media and internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle—from the show, various interviews and her 1999 rendition of "Cry Me a River" – had been watched over 100 million times Her audition video has been viewed on the internet several hundred million times Despite the sustained media interest she later finished in second place in the final of the show behind dance troupe Diversity.

Boyle's first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released on 23 November 2009 and became Amazon's best-selling album in pre-sales According to Billboard, "The arrival of I Dreamed a Dream ... marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991 In only six weeks of sales, it became the biggest selling album in the world for 2009, selling 9 million copies In September 2010, Boyle was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as having had the fastest selling debut album by a female artist in the UK, the most successful first week sales of a debut album in the UK, and was also awarded the record for being the oldest person to reach number one with a debut album in the UK

Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland to Patrick Boyle, a miner, World War II veteran and singer at the Bishop's Blaize, and Bridget, a shorthand typist, who were both immigrants from County Donegal, IrelandShe was the youngest of four brothers and six sisters Born when her mother was 47, Boyle was briefly deprived of oxygen during the difficult birth and was later diagnosed as having learning difficulties Boyle says she was bullied as a childand was nicknamed "Susie Simple" at school.

After leaving school with few qualifications, she was employed for the only time in her life as a trainee cook in the kitchen of West Lothian College for six months, took part in government training programmesand performed at a number of local venues

Boyle still lives in the family home, a four-bedroom council house, with her 10-year-old cat, Pebbles Her father died in the 1990s, and her siblings had left home. Boyle never married, and she dedicated herself to care for her ageing mother until she died in 2007 at the age of 91. Boyle has a reputation for modesty and propriety, admitting during her first appearance on Britain's Got Talent that she had "never been married, never been kissed In fairness her claim of never 'having been kissed' may well have represented a Scottish form of self-mocking humour. A neighbour reported that when Bridget Boyle died, her daughter "wouldn't come out for three or four days or answer the door or phone.

Boyle is a practising Roman Catholic and sang in her church choir at her church in Blackburn Boyle remains active as a volunteer at her church, visiting elderly members of the congregation in their homes On a 2010 episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show, Boyle summarised that her daily life was "mundane" and "routine" prior to stardom.

  • Ellie Goulding was lost for words when Clint Eastwood told her he was a fan

Ellie Goulding was lost for words when Clint Eastwood told her he was a fan of her music.

The 24-year-old singer has been travelling around America recently to promote her songs and performed at the world famous Coachella music festival when Clint revealed he was sorry to miss her set.
Despite his kind words, Ellie admits she was too nervous to speak to the Hollywood star.

' met Clint Eastwood at Coachella,' she explained. ' didn't have the guts to go up to him but someone else did and suddenly I'm in a picture with Usher, Clint and The Hoff! How weird is that?

'Clint was like, 'I'm really sorry I missed your set.' That was totally brilliant.'

During her stay in the US, Ellie even had the honour of performing on the prestigious television show Saturday Night Live.

' was excited and that helped with my nervousness. But all the cast popped by to say: 'Hi.' I feel lucky that it was my first experience of American stardom,' she told British magazine Star.

Nadine Coyle and Jason Bell split

Nadine Coyle and Jason Bell have split up.

The 'Insatiable' singer and the NFL hunk announced their engagement last September but Nadine has revealed the pair decided to break up a few weeks ago after agreeing they were "better" as friends.

She tweeted: "A few weeks ago Jason and I broke up. We are great friends and decided we are better this way. I'm in NYC working & I love all your support. (sic)".

Nadine had previously predicted a long engagement for the couple, saying it could even last a decade.

She said: "It will definitely be a long engagement. We haven't even had an engagement party. I'm going to ride this one out. It still feels so new, so we could do this for ten or 12 years, you know!"

The news of the break up comes just after it was revealed Nadine and her Girls Aloud bandmates, Sarah Harding, Cheryl Cole, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh are to reunite next year for a tour.

Close pal Louis Walsh said: "I've been on the phone to Cheryl all day, honestly I can show you texts, she's fine. She's getting back with Girls Aloud in 2012 and they're going to tour."

Nick Lachey's liver is 'furious' with him

Nick Lachey's liver is 'furious' with him after his wedding shower on Sunday (29.05.11).

The singer-turned-presenter- who proposed to TV beauty Vanessa Minnillo last November after dating for four years - threw a special cocktail reception at the London Hotel in West Hollywood, California to celebrate the couple's forthcoming nuptials but admitted he might have overdone it.

Nick - who was previously married to pop star Jessica Simpson - tweeted: "My liver is furious with me!! Great time last night at our wedding shower. (sic)"

Entertainment at the bash was provided by The Backbeats, an a cappella group who performed on season two of 'The Sing Off' which Nick presents while Nick may not have been the only one to be struggling to recover after the party with a source revealing guests including Nick's brother Drew Lachey "danced into the late hours".

A source told People.com: "Nick and Vanessa greeted guests hand-in-hand. Vanessa looked gorgeous in a white dress with a black sash. She and Nick both seemed very excited to celebrate with their families and friends.

"Everyone seemed to have a great time. It was a laid-back, yet sophisticated atmosphere. Guests danced until the late hours."

As for the Karma, I found a iPhone 4 at Macy's 2-days before shopping with my girlfriend, and I didn't think twice about not turning it in. I made this woman's day when she got it back. So I figured hey, maybe that was a little something I got for doing something honest a few days before

Wow. You deserve a gold star.

Obviously Apple loves bad providers. In Germany they contracted T-Mobile, a Telekom AG company (not because of bad service ... but because of no service at all  - as experienced in the past) That's THE reason why I don't want an iPhone.

But seriously ANY Australian will tell you that Telstra is rubbish.

Umm is this for real? I would've thought Australia wouldn't get the iPhone until the 3G version is out.

I think I will still hold out for the next version, even though I am keen on getting an iphone.

Yeah sure is, Telstra is pushing for their new wireless network (NextG) and from what I've seen with our company demo looks as though the iPhone will work. But being Telstra all I can say is that I wont buy one on a Telstra service, the iPhone is brilliant the service is rubbish (the connection to the web is CRAP, it drops out sooooooo much).

According to the information I'm getting through my higher powers at work the iPhone will be released within the next month (end of Feb being the latest date) but unfortunately I don't have prices but from what I've heard it will be "competivitely price" (I seriously don't know what that means since it's coming from Telstra).

The other thing Telstra is supposedly offering is a Video on Demand service for the iPhone a little like their Bigpond Movies (http://www.bigpondmovies.com/) service they currently offer.

I'd like to see the figures just for the UK rather than "international". I'm a firm believer that it's the Apple Stores that are causing the upswing. Outside of the US, the UK is the only country where Apple stores are expanding their reach, which would confirm whether or not my thinking is misguided.

I would not see a problem with them going to report at macworld if anything happens in the keynote Steve would recover like he did at last years Mac World where his clicker stopped working and you are also talking about a mac event unlike CES things don't crash :)

Actually he had a build of 10.5 crash on him when they first showed it off and he also had that camera incident (which was overblown).

How does Gnome 3.0 on Linux compare to the new UI in OSX Lion?

I've been playing around with Gnome 3.0, and it seems like the designers have a similar philosophy about desktop navigation.

Gnome 3.0 Preview (This is not my video):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joBXc3IGRBw

That's a pretty sick OS. I haven't ever run Fedora on a computer of mine, but my uncle swears by it. That video has convinced me to run it on my next box.

That comment about not including the burner is interesting, and I'm at least trying to give it some more thoughtful consideration. Who really needs to burn 30 - 50 GB of data? For backup solutions, wouldn't just getting a huge external hard drive be more practical? Portability might be a factor there, but external drives aren't that cumbersome I don't think. I'm thinking that the majority use of those HD media burners would be to copy movies with illicit applications. Could Apple put in place some protection framework that attempted to only allow creative-works-originating software to burn HD discs, (ie, iMovie, iDVD, FinalCut and other pro apps that use full quality, large size files) therefore denying use of a program that takes a quick and dirty imported disc image and burn it to disc, so that you'd have to work around some long and annoying solution to make an illegal copy (ala burning audio CDs in iTunes and reimporting them to strip the DRM) that would deter any easy mass pirating?

More simply, I'm curious of who out there needs to burn 30 to 50 GB chunks of data, too large for a dual layer DVD to hold, and why.

Why not get a mini displayport straight to DVI cable? I never understood the use of an adapter. Maybe someone can shed some light?

Dude. I haven't once suggested banning guns.

These days I'd be satisfied with a hint of awareness.

I was under the impression you had. Here you gave me that impression:

It's impossible to enforce a gun ban when all you have to do is drive to the next town to buy them.

If we were to implement restrictions it would have to be nation-wide, or else it would be too easily thwarted.

Fair enough. It took your statement as referring to bans.

Frankly awareness, or more specifically education, is the only solution. Gun owners need more education, particularly those who arm themselves for home defense or concealed carry. If citizens are expected to demonstrate proficiency in driving a car before being allowed on the road - and further proficiency for special kinds of driving (such as racing licenses, commercial licenses, limousine drivers, police driving training etc etc), then gun owners should get considerably more training in self-defense with firearms. Most hunters agree that mandatory hunter-safety classes are a good idea. If that is the case, self-defense training is even more necessary.

Furthermore, the public at large needs to be more educated about laws, regulations and firearms themselves. Fear of firearms can be healthy. Willfull ignorance towards them, not so much.

Exactly. I have never understood why my more liberal friends want to ban anything. Education is the key to solving the vast majority of our problems, not ignorance or fear. I grew up around guns all my life and had fun with them. I also loved archery.

After starting to play hockey and having skydived for three years, the one thing I've finally learned that is the most helpful thing in life is this- do things that scare you. Learn about them. You'll be better off, and you'll grow immensely as a person. Those things will also bring incredible people into your life.

Go to a firing range and learn about guns, citizenzen- even if it scares and repulses you. Trust me, you'll be all the better for it, and you might learn something about yourself you never knew was there. After all, knowledge is power.

Of course it does, right from Settings as well:
    ttp://web.mac.com/jzuena/IMG_0020.PNG

As soon as you try to use it (and I'm sure anything built-in on Android will have the same "feature"), the carrier has the option to charge extra before allowing it to work.

That isn't the case for the Nexus S/Nexus One AFAIK. You just tick the box, setup the SSID and if you want WPA activated and off you go.

This might be a little off topic but the following comment:

"One of the main promotional points of Android as its popularity has soared has been the unregulated nature of the app marketplaces for the platform."

reminded me that I have some degree of comfort that Apple screens apps so that I don't inadvertently download something which is actually a virus, steals passwords and other personal information, or does something else nasty.

Perhaps I am unduly comforted and there is some iTunes fine print that says they don't check for that sort of stuff. Otherwise I would have thought Apple could have used the "safety" aspect in it's marketing, and created some fear for Andriod users around they really know what they are getting.

In that way iTunes aspp store is sort of a big condom for your iPhone - pure protection.

The "permissions" screen upon installing an app is your friend. Upon installing any app, you know what it has access to.
    http://blog.mylookout.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Screen-shot-2010-07-29-at-12.16.01-PM.png
If an app has more access then you are comfortable with, you can cancel installation. Say for instance a simple tic tac toe game that wanted location and contact access. You would be warned before installation that it is requesting such access and if that was the case, I would cancel installation and not bother with the app.

You do know that Windows had an App Store before OS X, but it got axed due to it being badly implemented which resulted in lack of custom? All they are doing there is returning and improving one of their own features, not copying Apple.

If we were to implement restrictions it would have to be nation-wide, or else it would be too easily thwarted.

What do we do with the 200 million legally owned guns? Not to mention the unknown (but surely quite significant) number of illegally owned or stolen guns we can't even track?

I think any talk of a blanket ban is pure folly and ignores the reality of the situation.

The biggest problem is just how far apart people are on this issue. People with little or no exposure to guns generally fear them and support draconian bans; people who grew up surrounded by them are much more likely to support some level of gun ownership, but a vocal minority of them want to do away with most or all regulation. I think both extreme positions (seeking to ban most/all guns vs advocating little/no regulation) are unrealistic and need to be abandoned.

The NRA's current policy leans heavily towards automatic knee-jerk attacks towards any person or organization that might appear to criticise or question any aspect of firearms ownership, or to undertake any scientific study involving guns, safety, culture, crime, etc etc. Speaking as a gun owner myself, I think the NRA is a wayward, counterproductive organization that is far too combative and has strayed too far from their original purpose, becoming in the process a horrible caricature of itself. On the other hand, a large chunk of the anti-gun lobby consists of fearmongers who are themselves largely ignorant when it comes to firearms and prey on the ignorance and fear of people to gain support.

The whole political debate is broken, and I see no evidence that this will ever change. Both sides fear nothing more than concession to their opponent, so an eternal stalemate will continue.

The OP is an example of just how far from reality the "gun debate" in this country has strayed.
