And perhaps someone decided it was time for John Cleese to have a taste of his own medicine.
Hosting a comedy gala for Prince Charles's 60th birthday on Wednesday, the comic became increasingly battered and bruised.As part of a long-running joke during the evening, he picked up a series of on-stage injuries - which appeared to include a black eye.
The event ended and the Fawlty Towers star abandoned the sling, bandages and wheelchair he had been using as props, then headed out for dinner with the 38-year-old actress Lisa Hogan, with whom he is working on a film project.
