Newman married Joanne Woodward on January 29, 1958. They have three daughters — Elinor Teresa, Melissa Steward and Claire "Clea" Olivia. Newman has been married to Woodward now for almost 50 years and when asked why he never committed adultery by Empire magazine he famously replied "Why go out for a hamburger when you have steak at home?"
